Travel Checklist & Considerations

Here is a checklist of items you should review before you travel for your vacation to Barbados.

  • A valid passport and if necessary a visa
  • Contact details of the manager of the accommodation
  • Give the accommodation manager your flight details so they will know what time to expect you and can adjust their plans if your flight is delayed or cancelled
  • Currency -bring US or Bajan Dollars.  US Dollars are generally accepted across the island.  You also get a great rate of exchange if you buy your Bajan Dollars from a bank in Barbados.  Large supermarkets and stores accept most popular currency but there is a high rate of commission, so cheaper to buy from the bank.
  • Property address – you need this to get through immigration at the airport
  • Adaptor plugs – most computers have a transformer and can run on the local voltage but you need an adaptor to plug your British/Canadian/US etc laptop into the local system
  • Sun cream – it is always hot
  • Insect repellent – do chose a place with AC as this deters most insect, but if you plan to eat out in the evening then you should have a brand of repellent that you are happy with
  • Computer, laptop or tablet – most places have Wi-Fi so you are not limited to local TV packages and can check email etc. If you are super organised you can download programmes you want to watch before you go or take DVs.
  • Take some tea/coffee and snacks in case you are too tired to sort shopping on your first day or you arrive at a time when all of the shops are closed. Also check with the property manager whether they prepare a welcome basket and basic essentials like milk, sugar, toilet paper….
  • Take an unlocked mobile phone. Local calls from land line phones are free but any calls from or to your mobile are charged. If you don’t want any surprising mobile bills, then buy a local sim for all your calls. And of course use Whatsapp as much as possible because it is free
  • Take your driver’s licence – you will need this in order to get a temporary Bajan one. These are issued to you either by the car rental firm or the local police station. There is a small charge of around $10.
  • Identify recommended restaurants and places to visit before you travel –  some  recommendations are here

Things to Consider

Barbados is a very safe destination, however it is always wise to ensure you plan carefully and take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and property; to ensure you have an enjoyable experience.

  1. Make sure you travel with a valid passport or visa (if required). Also, bring another valid form of photo I.D., and photocopies of both I.D.’s in case of loss or theft.
  2. Persons seeking to obtain a Barbados driver’s license should travel with a valid National or International license. All authorized car rental companies can issue you a driver’s license.
  3. Give friends and family your contact information and itineraries in case of emergency. Additionally, you can register with your country’s embassy or consulate before you travel; that way your country is aware of your whereabouts.
  4. Keep luggage, handbags or backpacks in view at all times and keep your possessions close to your body.
  5. Don’t take around large amounts of cash; credit cards and travelers cheques are more secure alternatives.
  6. Only use taxis, tours and other transportation services with official markings. Only select transportation from official pickup points at transportation hubs.
